The basics

What is Botox?

Botox is a neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes the targeted muscle so it stops pulling on the skin above it, softening lines like crow's feet, frown lines between the brows and forehead creases.

It was first approved for cosmetic use by the FDA in 2002 and picked up further medical approvals in the years after. Millions of Botox treatments are performed in the US every year, making it one of the most requested procedures at med spas nationwide, including here at White Pearl.

The science

How Botox works

Botox blocks the nerve signal that tells a muscle to contract. With that signal quieted, the muscle relaxes and stops creasing the skin above it, which is what causes dynamic wrinkles to soften.

Dynamic wrinkles form from repeated expressions, think squinting or frowning, until the line stays even at rest. Botox targets that repeated muscle movement directly. It won't restore volume or skin elasticity lost to aging, that's more the territory of a filler, but it's very good at calming the muscle behind an expression line.

Beyond cosmetic lines, Botox also has medical applications our providers can discuss with you, including reducing excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and treating chronic migraines. Your treatment plan is built around your goals, not a one size fits all approach.

Common questions

Botox FAQs

How long does Botox last?
Typically 3 to 6 months depending on the area treated and your muscle activity. Most patients return every 3 to 4 months to maintain results.
Is Botox safe?
Yes, when it's administered by a trained medical provider. It's FDA-approved for both cosmetic and medical use and has a long safety track record.
Does Botox hurt?
Most patients describe it as a quick pinch. A very fine needle is used and the injections themselves take just a few minutes.
Can you get Botox while pregnant?
No. Botox isn't recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, so treatment is paused until after.
How often can you get Botox injections?
Most patients space treatments 3 to 4 months apart, once the previous results start to soften.
How many units of Botox for the forehead?
It varies by muscle strength and your goals, generally in the 10 to 30 unit range. Your provider will map this out at your consultation.
How long does it take for Botox to work?
You'll usually notice initial changes within 3 days, with full results settling in over about 2 weeks.
Does Botox help acne?
Botox isn't an acne treatment, though it's sometimes used off-label to reduce oil production. Ask your provider about acne-specific options instead.
When should you start getting Botox?
There's no set age. Some patients start in their late 20s or 30s as a preventive step, others begin once lines are more visible at rest.
Can you get Botox after microneedling?
Yes, though most providers recommend spacing the two out by a couple of weeks so your skin can fully heal in between.
